Water Damage Carpet Cleaning
If you’ve been the victim of a water leak or flood, there’s a strong possibility that you are in need of a professional carpet cleaning service. Depending on the water’s source, there’s a good chance that the carpet can be returned to it’s original condition without having to worry about safety and health. But determining the extent of the damage, and taking quick action are crucial to a successful water damage carpet cleaning project.
Determine the leak or flood source. This will help you figure out whether the carpet is even worth saving. Sanitary water comes from rain or pipes. Unsanitary water will come from toilets and other contaminated sources. Carpets that have been touched by black water (groundwater or raw sewage) will need to be removed immediately.
Naturally, you will want to stop the flow of water at it’s source in hopes of preventing any added damage. If you find yourself having difficulty with this task, you will want to hire a plumbing company to help you.
The area that has sustained water damage should be disinfected with the right cleaning solution for the situation. Be sure to air out the room that you are cleaning, as the fumes produced by the flood water may be toxic.
Using a box cutter, cut out the wet spots and lift the carpet up. Trash the padding you find underneath and make sure to keep the carpet elevated. Any furniture in the room should be removed or elevated on top of blocks or wood planks, making the floor as open as possible.
Rent a couple industrial-sized fans and position them so that they blow into the room. Keep them on high for a period of 2 days following the flood, making sure to keep the electrical cables away from any wet spots. Check for any wetness, and put a humidifier in the area that will help speed up the process.
Avoid walking in the room as much as possible. This will aid in maximizing the airflow of the problem areas and prevent the laminate seal from becoming weak.
After a period of twelve hours, check your carpet to view it’s progress. If the fans haven’t done much by this point, you may want to consider replacing the entire batch. Twelve hours is a sufficient amount of time for carpet to dry. If no progress has been made by then, you may be putting yourself at risk for hazardous allergens.
Get in touch with your insurance agent to evaluate your options. If you happen to reside in an apartment of condominium, this is essential, as you may not be directly responsible for the damages.
