Module 2 โ€“ Cleaning Process

This module covers the actual carpet cleaning process, from spotting and pre-spraying to agitation, extraction, stairs, hallways, protector, final grooming, and customer walkthrough. This is where technique, pace, and attention to detail determine the final result.

Technique determines results.

Good equipment matters, but equipment alone does not create excellent results. The technician must use the right tools, the right chemistry, the right stroke, and the right pace for each situation.

Module Sections

1. Tools & Spotting Setup (0:00)

What this section teaches: The importance of having the right spotting tools, including grooming rakes, bone scrapers, duckbill scissors, white towels, and a full spotting kit.

Key points:

  • Always use clean white towels
  • Use the right spotting tool for the situation
  • Carry more than one cleaner
  • Be prepared for different types of stains

Excellence Standard: Always be prepared. Use the right tool and the right chemistry for the job.

2. Spot vs. Stain (~1:30)

What this section teaches: The difference between a spot and a stain, and why that difference matters before making promises to the customer.

Excellence Standard: Know the difference before you promise results.

3. Spotting Process (~2:00)

What this section teaches: A proper spotting sequence: apply cleaner, agitate, allow dwell time, and extract thoroughly.

Key points:

  • Apply the appropriate cleaner
  • Agitate with the correct tool
  • Give the chemistry time to work
  • Extract thoroughly so no residue remains
  • Repeat if needed

Excellence Standard: Do not rush spotting. Use proper technique and fully rinse the area.

4. Customer Expectation on Stains (~3:00)

What this section teaches: Asking the customer whether major improvement is acceptable and making sure they understand that some stains may not come out completely.

Excellence Standard: Set expectations before cleaning. Prevent disappointment and callbacks by being honest up front.

5. Spot Extraction & Rinsing (4:45)

What this section teaches: Extracting spots after dwell time and making sure no chemical residue is left behind.

Excellence Standard: Residue causes resoiling. Thorough rinsing is part of professional spotting.

6. Pre-Spray Setup (6:20)

What this section teaches: Connecting the solution hose to the injection sprayer and using the shutoff valve to control pressure properly.

Excellence Standard: Set up efficiently and correctly. Good setup makes the rest of the process easier and more professional.

7. Pre-Spray Application (7:00)

What this section teaches: Applying pre-spray evenly across the carpet, with extra attention to traffic areas and problem spots.

Key points:

  • Apply evenly
  • Do not oversaturate
  • Avoid furniture and walls
  • Give extra attention to traffic lanes and edges when needed

Excellence Standard: Even, controlled application. Pre-spray is where the cleaning power begins.

8. Agitation (9:12)

What this section teaches: Agitating the pre-spray to activate the chemistry and release soil from the fibers.

Excellence Standard: Do not skip this step. Agitation makes the chemistry come alive, especially in high-traffic areas.

9. Transition to Extraction Setup (9:54)

What this section teaches: Disconnecting the injection sprayer and connecting the wand after pre-spray and agitation are complete.

Excellence Standard: Transition smoothly and stay organized between steps.

10. Hose Control โ€“ โ€œCheckmate Rollโ€ (10:20)

What this section teaches: A controlled way to handle hoses in the home without dragging them into walls, corners, and furniture.

Excellence Standard: Control everything. Do not drag hoses carelessly through the home.

11. Machine Startup & Equipment Prep (12:00)

What this section teaches: Keeping the wand clean, maintaining quick disconnects, using lubricant, and replacing worn quick disconnects when needed.

Excellence Standard: Maintain equipment before it causes problems. Professional equipment care is part of professional cleaning.

12. Vacuum Hose Safety (17:19)

What this section teaches: Keeping children and pets away from open vacuum hose lines and making sure the hose is either attached to a tool, disconnected, or the machine is off.

Excellence Standard: Safety matters. Never leave dangerous equipment open and unattended around children or pets.

13. Extraction Technique โ€“ Core Wand Skills (17:44)

What this section teaches: Proper wand technique, overlapping passes, controlling solution flow, and adjusting speed based on soil level.

Key points:

  • Overlap each pass by about 50%
  • Use slow strokes on heavily soiled carpet
  • Move faster on lightly soiled carpet
  • Flush the fibers thoroughly

Excellence Standard: Technique determines results. Slow down when the carpet needs more thorough soil removal.

14. Edge Cleaning & Sensitive Areas (~21:00)

What this section teaches: How to clean along edges, fireplaces, tile transitions, and around wood furniture without causing secondary damage.

Excellence Standard: Stay controlled. Be careful around wood, metal, and sensitive edges.

15. Dry Strokes (~22:00)

What this section teaches: Going back over the carpet with strong dry strokes to remove excess moisture and pollutants.

Excellence Standard: Dry strokes are critical. They help with drying, improve results, and reduce the chance of overwetting.

16. Advanced Wand Techniques (~23:00)

What this section teaches: Long strokes, chop-chop strokes, and targeted treatment for heavily soiled or stained areas.

Excellence Standard: Use common sense and adjust your technique to the carpet condition. Not every area needs the same stroke.

17. Air Movers (26:31)

What this section teaches: Using air movers to speed up the drying process while cleaning the rest of the home.

Excellence Standard: Fast drying equals better results, fewer problems, and a more professional service.

18. Handle Position & Body Mechanics (27:02)

What this section teaches: Adjusting handles, protecting your back, and working in a way that reduces long-term wear on your body.

Excellence Standard: Work smart, not hard. Protect your body so you can keep doing quality work long term.

19. Stairs Cleaning (28:24)

What this section teaches: Pre-spraying stairs, agitating stairs, using a stair hook, cleaning the edge and face of the stair, and finishing with dry strokes.

Key points:

  • Pre-spray the entire stair
  • Agitate the fibers
  • Use a stair hook to reduce pull and pressure
  • Clean the edge, face, and top correctly
  • Finish with strong dry strokes

Excellence Standard: Take your time. Customers notice stairs, and detail work matters.

20. Hallways & High-Traffic Areas (32:00)

What this section teaches: Giving extra attention to hallways and heavily used carpet areas by applying more pre-spray, agitation, and slower extraction.

Excellence Standard: High traffic requires more effort. Slow down and flush out the soil properly.

21. Explaining Wear vs. Soil (34:00)

What this section teaches: Explaining that some traffic lane appearance is caused by fiber damage, not just soil, and setting customer expectations before the cleaning result is judged.

Excellence Standard: Educate before they complain. Explain wear versus soil up front so the customer has realistic expectations.

22. Mattress Cleaning Upsell (35:22)

What this section teaches: Offering mattress cleaning as an add-on service using a stair tool for power vacuuming or other cleaning methods.

Excellence Standard: Look for helpful add-on services that benefit the customer and increase the job value naturally.

23. Equipment Maintenance During the Job (36:25)

What this section teaches: Cleaning screens, flushing sprayers, lubricating parts, and keeping equipment working properly so it performs correctly on the job.

Excellence Standard: Maintain equipment before problems slow you down or affect quality.

24. Carpet Protector Application (38:07)

What this section teaches: Reapplying protector evenly, explaining the value to the customer, and using the correct application method.

Key points:

  • Apply evenly
  • Do not get protector on furniture or walls
  • Use correct pressure and coverage
  • Explain why protector matters

Excellence Standard: Proper application creates real protection. This is an easy add-on when explained correctly.

25. Raking in Carpet Protector (~39:40)

What this section teaches: Using the correct rake for the carpet type and moving the protector down into the fiber instead of leaving it only on the surface.

Excellence Standard: Do it correctly, not just quickly. Protector should be worked into the fiber for full performance.

26. Replacing Furniture, Tabs & Blocks (40:49)

What this section teaches: Putting furniture back carefully and using foam blocks or foil tabs to prevent wood stains, rust transfer, and secondary damage.

Excellence Standard: Protect the customerโ€™s furniture and carpet. Finish professionally, not carelessly.

27. Final Groom (41:31)

What this section teaches: Removing track marks, improving the appearance of the carpet, and using the groom as a final inspection opportunity.

Excellence Standard: Finish strong. Appearance matters, and final grooming leaves a better impression on the customer.

28. Final Walkthrough (43:26)

What this section teaches: Checking the work with the customer before packing up so missed spots can be corrected immediately.

Excellence Standard: Eliminate callbacks whenever possible. Walk the job before leaving.

29. Closing the Job & Referrals (43:51)

What this section teaches: Asking the customer if they are satisfied, giving business cards, and encouraging word-of-mouth referrals.

Excellence Standard: The job is not fully finished until the customer is satisfied and you have given them a way to refer you.
